Jazz Fest building anticipation with off-season concerts

Good news: You don’t have to wait for next summer to enjoy a taste of the internationally renowned Montreal International Jazz Festival. The organizers have just announced the latest round of off-season concerts to tide us over until late June, when the official 2012 edition kicks begins.

First, the needs-no-introduction blues hero Buddy Guy will perform at Metropolis this coming April 14th. Guy has played the festival a number of times before, and though I’ve never been able to see him live, this double bill is pretty enticing: opening the show will be James Hunter, an English soul singer with a vintage sensibility and voice that no doubt sounds incredible live.

Just a couple of months later, blues and dad-rock legends George Thorogood and the Destroyers will also appear at Metropolis on June 7, their first visit since a triumphant performance in 2010. The band actually appeared at the Jazz Fest with Buddy Guy in 2007, in another storied night of the festival’s history. This tour is particularly special because Thorogood will be supporting his new release 2120 South Michigan Ave., a tribute to the legendary Chess Records label, who actually launched Buddy Guy to stardom. The album was an excuse for Thoroood to get even bluesier and I’m definitely going to try my best to get a ticket to this one.

Sure to be snapped up fast, they are available at the Metropolis box office, or online via Admission (phone 514-790-1245 or go to admission.com). Tickets for Thorogood cost $44.50 and Buddy Guy tickets start at $39.50. For more details on the line-up as they become available, keep an eye on the Festival’s website.
