Juliette et Chocolat: Temptation

The only thing I can’t resist is temptation. – Oscar Wilde

A very appropriate quote for a chocolate bar. A quick description : eating and drinking all things chocolate. For chocoholics stopping by Juliette & Chocolat, resistance is useless.

Juliette & Chocolat is a cafe, creperie, and chocolate bar. The three locations are often full, especially in the evening. I like the one on Laurier St., as it’s a quieter, more romantic street to walk along at the end of the night. It’s the type of place one just wants to linger, sipping hot chocolate and nibbling on a brownie. Do this late at night, and chances are the caffeine doses will turn you into an insomniac.

It’s also a great place to go for dessert for supper, for while they do serve actual food, one can easily just eat desserts. After all, that’s the specialty of the house. Start with one of their crepes, move onto brownies, try a fruit platter dripping in chocolate and then finish off with a homemade chocolate. Their selection is simply outstanding!

To eat, there are crepes, fondue, brownies, caramels, cake, sundaes, pastries and chocolates.

To drink, different assortments of hot and cold chocolate : dark, white, milk and spiced, with or without alcohol. Grandma’s style is thicker : it’s like drinking melted chocolate. There is even a chocolate shot. Fruit smoothies with a shot of chocolate and coffee also, of course.

Half the menu or more is chocolate-something or another, and the other half often comes with a chocolate sauce. A sprinkling of nuts here and there or toasted coffee beans add a nice crunch. Fruit sorbet acts as a trou Normand and refreshes the palate. But then it’s back to chocolate.

The crepes were paper thin and light, a drizzle of dark chocolate covered the fruit. On the sundae, chocolate fondant. Unctuous. The brownies were served warm, one was a touch dry, one was decadent.
The service is usually terrible but the chocolate makes you forget to complain. But it’s hard to get mad at someone wearing a oversized red chef hat. Nearly everything can be ordered to go, but pastries really are better eaten there. Overnight in the fridge is never as good. An assortment of chocolates-to-go might be a better choice, though somehow they were a tad disappointing the next week. Good chocolates, not quite mass-market, but not quite as refined as would be expected.

It’s a great place to hang out for all things chocolate. Be warned however : If you are looking for an early morning chocolate fix, you’ll be disappointed. Juliette & Chocolate only opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. weekends

A place to satisfy a serious chocolate craving! Temptation be damned.
