“I’m sure that’s what Gilligan said” – Barney Stinson

It can pass slowly, it can fly by, or it can stand still. Time, which was the theme of this week’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, can greatly affect us in different ways at different moments. From the beginning of the episode to the end, each character was dealing with time in a different way.

After Robin and Barney cheat on their significant others, they are forced to deal with the consequences and guilt. Realizing that they will both be on a boat the following night with Nora and Kevin, Robyn says “It’s a three hour boat ride, what could go wrong?” that’s when Barney responds with the brilliant line “I’m sure that’s what Gilligan said.”

Clearly foreshadowing the many things that did go wrong, this episode had a much more serious and sad tone to it than usual. Since the end of last season we’ve been waiting to find out if it’s Nora or Robin that Barney is getting married to in the future. Since most of us are routing for Robin and Barney to get back together, this episode was filled with mixed emotions as we anticipated their reunion only to be as heartbroken as Barney was by the end of it.

The sadness wasn’t prominent throughout the whole episode though, we were treated to one of Marshall and Ted’s old habit that dies hard: “eating a sandwich”. They weren’t expecting the sandwich to be laced with “hard meats”, leading to their trippy experience with time at the concert. While time couldn’t move fast enough for Robin and Barney, Marshall and Ted’s drug induced state was warping their sense of time, leading them to believe they lost an hour of time on an adventure in search of nachos, when in reality it was only two minutes.

Needless to say, the mixture of humour in last night’s episode and progress in the relationships of the show’s characters, left us wanting more and with with a dying curiosity as to what’s going to happen next.
